Oliver Has a lot of beauty

Oliver is a beautiful place, but it will not be for long. The orchards are disappearing because of grape vines. Animals are losing their homes because everyone needs more grapes. Because they want more grapes, they are trapping birds and killing them. Their main target is the starling.

Well the falcons eats starlings and the starlings eat the Mosquitoes. Mosquitoes spread the west Nile virus. Are grapes really worth it. Is it worth destroying the forest and animals around us so they can make their wine.

That way Oliver can be the wine capital. I drink wine once in awhile. I would give it up to stop what is happening.

BC is know for it beauty and animals. Soon that will be no more. BC is also known for its hunting which I also do not agree with.

Between hunting and grapes, the animals do not have a prayer to survive. If we manage to put the starling on the endanger list. We will end up with a greater chance of getting the west Nile virus. If that does not kill us, all the chemicals that they spray will.

People keep talking about what you can do to help our environment Well we need nature of the land to help us, because with out nature we are just doing more damage.

Nature can take care of its self with out the help of humans if we give it a chance. If we work with nature we might be able to slow down the damage. We have to stop tearing down the forest and replacing them with grapes. We need to stop using so much chemicals. We all need to be aware of our earth and the creatures we share it with.

I know when we first moved here we would go for drives and look at the beauty around us, but now it is all disappearing. Some day I hope that people will open their eyes all around the world, and see what is happening around them. Oliver is my home now and I can see what is happening and I wish I could stop it. We do our best. We do not use chemicals in our garden, we grow sunflowers for the birds because they eat the seeds as well as the bugs. So we work together. We have plants in our garden that invites the good bugs so they can eat the bad bugs.

People who have visited our site have seen our garden and how beautiful it is. That is why are garden looks this way, it does because we work together with nature. We do not us chemicals, we us all natural fertilisers.

By Juanita Fraser

Papa Joe a story about a man who lives in Oliver BC

On Jan 19, 2008 I walked up to a man who was playing his guitar in front of the mall. His name was Papa Joe he is 51 years old. I decided to ask him if he would be willing to talk to me. I told him I would like to write about Oliver, and the people who live here. He agreed. Here is his story.

Papa Joe has been playing his guitar, and a various other instruments on the street for three years in the winter. He is on disability. He has spinal arthritis, and needs to take a great deal of pain medication. He lives in a trailer with his wife, and he has a dog, and a couple of cats. He said that "I do not drink or do drugs." "I use the Morphine that my doctor gives me that is all." He plays his music to make a little extra money, so that he can try and keep up with his bills. He just recently got a bill for his gas. His payments were behind so they cut his gas off. He has started catching up on his payments, and they have turn his gas back on. He is doing his best, to pay his bills but it is not easy. People on disability do not get a lot of money.

Papa Joe's music of choice is the blues. Papa Joe, was named by the kids who know him and see him on the street. In a day if he is lucky he will make $50.00. Today when I walked up to him it was afternoon, and we talked, he told me that all he had made so far was $7.00. Even through he was out in the cold playing his music his spirits were up. He told me that the people of Oliver were good people. As he was smiling. He asked me where he could find the story I was writing about him. And when he got the time, he could go to the seniors home, or the library to read it. He also asked if I could send my article to him. I do not normally do that. I think since he gave me the time to talk, I will do that. I gave him my sight. I look forward to talking with him again, and maybe getting a chance to write more about him, and his life. As I said good-bye and shook his hand, he said to me "God bless and you, you have made my day." "I replied God bless to you too." It felt good to talk to some one who is doing what ever they can to survive in this world.

I know what it is like to be on disability my husband has been on it for at least five years. He has a rare skin condition, as well as osteoporosis, and his bones are thinning at a fast rate. He has been on prednisone for 15 years to keep his skin in check. He still works part time at two different jobs. Before he ended up on disability he was a work aholic. He had to stop, because he was ending up in the hospital every three months. I stay at home because our daughter is special needs. With the way prices are going up how is anyone going to survive in this world. Even people who are not on disability, can not manage with the high cost of living.

By Juanita Fraser

Law That Not Every One Knows

We have laws to keep us safe. Some laws I wonder about.

A lot of people take first aid, and if they see someone who needs help, they can help them. Did you know that if you give first aid to someone and you are not Police, Paramedic, or Firemen, you can be sued by a person or a persons family.

For example you come a cross someone who is having a heart attack, and you know first aid. You try and help them, and they end up dieing. That persons family can sue you. Even if it was not your fault that they died. You did ever thing you could.

Or, If a person who is having a heart attack who survives can also sue you.

I did not find this out until 10 years a go. I was at work I saw a man fall over. I went to help. My boss grabbed me, and said "don't." I told him I had first aid. He said "I know you want to help, You can help him by calling 911." I called 911, they arrived in fifteen minutes.

After they had got there I asked my boss why did you not let me help him. My boss told me about the law. I could not believe what he said, so I checked it out on the net, and to my surprised my boss was right. In some states and countries they have what they call a Good Samaritan Laws. The good Samaritan laws protect you a little bit. The problem is Not everyone goes by the Good Samaritan laws. These are the things you have to do before giving a stranger First aid.

Obtain consent before giving first aid: A person has the right to refuse first aid. Before acting at the scene of an emergency, identify yourself and tell the victim that you know first aid. Then ask for permission to help.

Expressed consent: If the victim gives permission, you may begin first aid.

Implied consent: If the victim is unconscious or unresponsive and the situation is life-threatening, you may assume that if the person were able to respond, he, or she, would likely have accepted help. You may then begin first aid.

Don't abandon the victim: Once you've begun first aid, don't stop until medical assistance arrives, or until you're so exhausted that you can't continue giving care.

Give first aid according to your training: Follow the practices that you've been taught. Don't try to perform first aid procedures beyond your skill level.

I'm not telling anyone not to give first aid, you just have to be careful. I know that if something happened to me, I would be thankful for the person who gave me first aid, and saved my life. A lot of times the person you help, or their family will not sue, they are just happy that you helped them. Now a days you never know how people feel.

By Juanita Fraser.
